Tucked into the eastern slopes of Sonoma Mountain at 540 feet, Olson Vineyard has been producing expressive Merlot since its planting in 1998. This is truly a gentleman’s vineyard—Mr. and Mrs. Olson’s own backyard. With just three acres of vines rooted in Goulding Clay Loam, the site is small in size but immense in character. Farmed at 870 vines per acre, it consistently yields an average of three tons per acre—producing concentrated fruit that defines the elegance and structure of Sonoma Mountain Merlot.
Olson Vineyard is part of the historic Sobre Vista Ranch, once a sprawling estate owned by the Spreckels family, heirs to the Spreckels Sugar Company fortune. Purchased in 1897, the ranch became a grand country retreat where racehorses were bred and guests entertained against the dramatic backdrop of Sonoma Mountain.
The story goes back even further to 1872, when Colonel George F. Hooper purchased the property, named it Sobre Vista, and planted almonds, olives, citrus, and wine grapes—establishing a legacy of agriculture that continues more than 150 years later.
That history, paired with the Olsons’ attentive, high-touch farming, gives the vineyard’s fruit its unmistakable sense of place: Merlot with mountain structure, layered flavor, and a story rooted deep in Sonoma’s agricultural heart.
