The Suisun Valley AVA was created just a year after its immediate westerly neighbor, Napa Valley. These valley floor vineyards are primarily composed of sandstone and shale with some interbedded volcanic flows from nearby Howell Mountain. Suisun (pronounced sue-soon) is the Native American word for ‘west wind’ and these constant winds help to cool and temper the heat of the valley which creates ideal growing conditions for grapes.
Turks Head Wines is proud to be sourcing fruit from the oldest operating vineyard in the appellation, Wooden Valley Vineyard, which was planted in 1933 continues to be meticulously farmed by the Lanza family. Our particular block of Sauvignon Blanc is home to the oldest vines on the estate and is situated on one of the few vineyard hillsides within the entire AVA.
